Stefanie Fail is the designer&maker of A Common Thread, a one-woman-sweatshop where everything is made by hand.
She started sewing and crafting at an age when it was probably unsafe for my little fingers to be near a sewing machine.
She loved to do clothes for her little baby doll, since then, she has been keeping craft-busy with sewing, knitting, crocheting and jewelry-making.
Originally from the deep south, outside of Savannah, Georgia, she moved to NYC ten years ago.
After living in Manhattan for a few years, she made the move to Brooklyn. « I adore living in Brooklyn! There's so much to be inspired by, just by walking down my block».
If she has a particular necklace or pair of earrings in my head that she absolutely wants, but can't find anywhere... She researches materials to make it herself.
«I'm also very much inspired by vintage looks, and seek out vintage materials to rework them into modern one-of-a-kind pieces. I recycle and reuse vintage and eco-friendly materials all of the time».
She is inspired by different elements and pieces, maybe a vintage art deco brass bow or a bright red yarn. She just finds a way to transform it into something she wants to wear.
She also like a taking traditional methods, like knitting and crochet, and applying them in a new way, making them as jewelry, for something new and unique.
«For me, fashion is about creating your own personal style that fits your own personality and something you feel the most like yourself in».

Stefanie ha cominciato a cucire e creare ad un'età precoce, quando forse non era sicuro per le sue ancora piccole mani stare vicino ad una macchina da cucire.
Amava creare abiti per la sua piccola bambola, e da allora ha sempre impegnato il suo tempo libero nel cucire, fare l'uncinetto o la maglia e creare gioielli.
Originaria del profondo sud, appena fuori da Savannah, in Georgia, Stefanie dieci anni fa, si trasferì a NYC. Dopo qualche anno vissuto a Manhattan, ha deciso così di spostarsi a Brooklyn.
«Adoro vivere a Brooklyn! C'è tanta ispirazione qui, basta camminare per le strade».
Se nella sua mente desidera un particolare paio di orecchini oppure una collana che, però, non riesce a trovare da nessuna parte… Cerca i materiali e lo crea da sè. A mano. Rigorosamente.
«Sono molto ispirata e attratta dal look vintage, ricerco materiali antichi da rielaborare in moderni oggetti one of a kind. Continuamente, riciclo e riuso pezzi vintage e materiali eco-friendly».
Semplicemente, cerca il metodo per trasformare le cose vecchie in qualcosa di nuovo da indossare.
«Moda, per me, significa creare il proprio stile personale, che rispecchi perfettamente la tua personalità, qualcosa che senti come parte di te stessa».
